Mapping of Storytelling, Art, Identity and Community in Peatland Restoration
MOSAIC aims to engage with local communities living and working in or adjacent to blanket bog habitats in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The project provides a platform for local communities to represent their lived experience of and relationship to peatlands through art. In collaboration with farmers, landowners and residents we will share narratives that honour the past, address present challenges, and help to navigate the future of our peatlands.
Ireland
Northern Ireland
Scotland
The three peatland communities in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland will have opportunities to share knowledge and learn from one another at different points throughout the project, including through mini exhibitions co-created in each area, capturing and sharing audio-visual material across the sites, and a final event bringing together people from each region.
A creative, Place-based approach
Peatlands are landscapes where people and natural environments are deeply intertwined. Communities who live in and around peatlands are embedded within these environments, shaping and being shaped by them over generations. Successful long-term peatland restoration needs to recognise and value local knowledge, respect lived experience and create platforms for communities to tell stories and contribute to decision-making about their own landscapes. MOSAIC responds to this need by adopting a creative, place-based approach to community engagement. By drawing on international experiences, tested methodologies and working closely with local communities, the project will develop best practices and recommendations for community engagement with ecological restoration through art.
